Stage 1 Chemistry A
Recommendations:
· Successful completion of Year 10 Science is recommended. You should have basic mathematical skills, an interest in chemistry, and the ability to work independently.
· Successful completion of Stage 1 Chemistry A (1CEM10A) in Semester 1 is strongly recommended for progression to Stage 1 Chemistry B (1CEM10B) in Semester 2.
What Will You Learn?
In this course, you will learn about:
· Materials and Their Atoms: atomic structure, elements, the periodic table and the properties of materials.
· Combining Atoms: ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, chemical formulas, and the relationship between structure and properties.
· Molecules: molecular polarity, intermolecular forces, carbon compounds, and their properties and reactions.
You will conduct safe investigations, analyse results, evaluate evidence, apply scientific concepts and calculations, and explore science as a human endeavour.
You will complete four summative assessment tasks:
· 2 Folio Tasks (a Science as a Human Endeavour Folio and a Deconstruct and Design Folio)
· 2 Skills and Applications Tasks (Topic Tests at the end of each unit)
Who is This Course For?
· This course is for you if you enjoy science and want to understand the composition, structure and properties of substances and how they change. It suits students interested in further study or careers in chemistry, health, engineering, environmental science or related fields.
What Do You Need?
· NTSDE will provide you with a code to access the eBook textbook. If you prefer a physical copy, you or your home school may purchase one.
· NTSDE will dispatch a non-returnable Practical Investigation Kit at the end of Term 1, Week 3.
· You will need a scientific calculator and reliable access to the online course materials.
Target Audience:
· Stage 1 students.
Length:
