Community Studies

Students in Community Studies learn in a community context and interact with teachers, peers (other students), and community members. You decide the focus of your community activity, which should begin from a point of personal interest, skill, or knowledge.

By setting challenging and achievable goals in your community activity, you'll enhance your knowledge and understanding in a guided and supported learning program.

You'll also develop your capacity to work independently and to apply your skills and knowledge in practical ways in your community.

The course consists of 3 main assessments.

  1. Contract - this is the first main assessment and is signed off by you and your teacher.  It requires you to break down your Community Activity into a series of planned steps of what you will do to carry out your Community Activity.  You will be given a template to help you with this, and exemplars to view.  This is assessed by your teacher and worth 20% of the overall mark.
  2. Folio - The folio records the evidence of what you did when you did it.  A key part of the folio is your journal where you record how your planned activity (identified in your contract) went.  You are also expected in your journal to reflect each time on one of 3 capabilities (we'll discuss capabilities later) that you will focus on, were met and/or developed.  This is also assessed by your teacher and worth 50% of the overall mark.
  3. Reflection - The reflection document is carried out after you have completed your activity and presented it to a community group.  This document looks at 8 key areas and is approximately 1,000 words in length.  You will have a template to help you with writing this.  This document has to be submitted by week 3 of the 4th Term as it is externally assessed and is worth 30% of your overall grade
